The Scientific name is: Curcuma longa
 
Turmeric looks like ginger. It is the dried rhizomes of the plant curcuma longa which grows up to a height 5 to 6 feet.  It is native to tropical South Asia. India is the largest producer and users of turmeric in the world. It is also known as Indian saffron.
Raw turmeric is boiled in water for around 1 hour to become soft. The water is drained and the turmeric is put in the sun until it becomes hard and dry.
 
Turmeric is the main ingredient in curries and curry powder. It creates a wonderful flavour as well as the characteristic yellow colour. It is one of the key ingredients for many Indian, Persian and Thai dishes such as curry and many more. However its use as a coloring agent is not of primary value in South Asian cuisine.
 
 Its main application is Southern Asia is in Ayurveda treatments. (India’s ancient medicine systems).Ayurveda treatments have been aware of Turmeric and its medicinal value for decades; its properties are now widely recognized and supported by research.
 
Turmeric is probably the most commonly used spice in Ayurveda treatments. It is used to purify the blood and for treating skin conditions. It is used in the treatment of the skin, heart, liver and lungs. It is used for epilepsy, bleeding disorders and skin diseases.
 
 It has general purifying qualities and is used to treat a variety of systemic problems :  as an analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-allergy, antioxidant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, appetizer, astringent, cardiovascular, carminative, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, stimulant, and vulnerary.
 
Turmeric is used in the treatment of:  Anemia, cancer, diabetes, digestion, food poisoning, gallstones, indigestion, IBS, parasites, poor circulation, staph infections, and wounds.
